One of my primary goals when joining New York Magazine was to create distinctive social designs for feature stories and columns. These stories range from recurring columns and annual features to in-depth investigative pieces. Rather than relying on a single image, I wanted to develop designs that captured the unique visual identity of each story, emphasizing their depth and narrative.
My first objective was to draw inspiration from the print magazine's visual cues and reimagine them for social platforms. For stories not directly adapted from the print edition, I designed them independently, while still staying true to the visual identities of each vertical. Over time, these designs evolved to align with our changing social strategy.
In total, I've designed hundreds of stories for our social channels, though below are just a few highlights from each vertical. These designs were created specifically for social media, not handed off to social editors. I built them custom in InDesign, working closely with the team to determine the most effective visual strategy for each story. More designs can be found here.
